Galaxies at High Redshift
Within just the last few years, we have advanced from knowing only a few galaxies at z > 2 to having redshifts for nearly 1000 z ∼ 2–5 objects. The majority of this sample has been detected through the photometric “dropout” technique used so successfully by Steidel and his collaborators. In addition, a handful of objects have already been detected at z > 5, and we may already have a few objects...
متن کاملOld Galaxies at High Redshift
The most passive galaxies at high redshift are unlikely to be identified by either narrow-band emission-line searches, or by Lyman limit searches (both techniques which have been highlighted at this meeting) simply because such selection methods rely on the presence of a strong ultraviolet component. Selection on the basis of extreme radio power has also proved to yield optically active objects...
متن کاملHigh-redshift radio galaxies: at the crossroads
The next generation of surveys of extragalactic radio sources will be dominated by different types of objects than the jetted-AGN that dominate surveys like 3C, 6C and 7C. Before radio astronomy becomes concentrated on the new types of object, it is vital that we understand the cosmological importance of the jetted-AGN that have been studied for many years. I argue that, as observational manife...
متن کاملThe Spatial Distribution Function of Galaxies at High Redshift
This is the first exploration of the galaxy distribution function at redshifts greater than about 0.1. Redshifts are based on the North and South GOODS Catalogs. In each catalog we examine clustering in the two redshift bands 0.47 ≤ z ≤ 0.8 and 0.9 ≤ z ≤ 1.5. The mean redshifts of the samples in these bands are about 0.6 and 1.1. Our main result is that at these redshifts the galaxy spatial dis...
